Description

With their rush to move instruction at all levels online in response to the world-wide pandemic of 2020, some instructors and course designers have inadvertently left some students out of many learning activities because they have not employed well established inclusive practices. These students include some who have disabilities that impact their abilities to see, hear, move, learn, and engage. The content of this presentation provides a path forward in improving existing offerings and designing new ones that ensure that all students can benefit from online educational opportunities.

Sheryl will present quick tips for getting started as well as topics of importance to include in professional development for online learning designers and instructors. She will also provide links to useful resources for further study.

The objectives of this session are for participants to be able to describe the difference between universal design (UD) and accommodations-only approaches to access for students, give examples of how limitations of assistive technology (AT) can help determine UD practices with respect to IT, share and apply tips for the design of an accessible online course, including making pedagogy inclusive and designing accessible documents, videos and we resources.
